Your Guide to SMS Marketing

Explanation of Terms

The following is a list of terms that we think are important to know and understand regarding SMS marketing.

SMS- Stands for “Short Message Service.”  This is typically what people are talking about when they say “text message.”

MMS- Stands for “Multimedia Messaging Service.”  This is how pictures, video, and other multimedia content is sent over cellular networks.

Keyword- When you sign up with Mobile Text Alerts, you choose a keyword.  It is helpful if this keyword is something unique to you and your business.  One of the ways your clients can sign up for your service is by texting this keyword to 662-200-4303.

Shortcode- Included with your Mobile Text Alerts account is a keyword on our long code (662-200-4303). Sometimes, it is more convenient for your subscribers to be able to text in to a number that is a little shorter. A “shortcode” is a 5 or 6 digit number. Texting in your keyword to a shortcode instead of the long code can increase subscription rates by up to 60%.

Subscriber- Once somebody signs up for your service, they become a subscriber.  This means they will receive the messages that you send out using Mobile Text Alerts.One subscriber is equal to one phone number and/or email address.


What is SMS Marketing?

SMS marketing is a way to deliver content and information about your service and products directly to the pockets of your clients.  Studies show that text messages are opened 99% of the time, compared to around 30% with e-mail.  This kind of engagement is crucial to the success of your service.  It is also distinct from other forms of marketing and outreach campaigns in another important way: SMS marketing with Mobile Text Alerts is permission based.  Many people will scan through their e-mail inboxes and quickly dismiss the multitudes of messages sitting there from companies and services who have reached out to them.  But with SMS marketing, they are only receiving messages and content that they have agreed to receive.  This puts the control over how they engage with content back in their hands.


One of the specific ways that our clients use our service is to alert their subscribers to time sensitive pricing or sales of their products.  For example, a LuLaRoe retailer might have a one hour window where their products are discounted.  They can use Mobile Text Alerts to send out a message informing interested people about the great opportunity of the sale.  We mentioned earlier that text messages have a 99% read rate, and we also know that 90% of text messages are opened within 3 minutes of being received.  This results in a great response rate and directs more traffic to your business than you could expect from any other form of marketing.


Things to know about keywords with Mobile Text Alerts

  1. The most important thing to consider when choosing your keyword is to keep it simple.  You want your keyword to have an obvious connection to your business.
  2. Keywords CAN be changed at any time, just send us an e-mail at This means you can change your keyword to reflect specific things or times for your business, at no extra charge.
  3. Keywords are NOT case sensitive


All about subscribers

So, how do you go about getting subscribers?  If you have an existing list of numbers, we’ve made it a breeze to import them into our system, but if you’re starting from scratch you might need some help. Listed below are some things we’ve found to be helpful:

  1. A great way to get subscribers is by offering some sort of incentive. Whether it’s a special discount, a coupon code, or exclusive information.
  2. Newsletters with a section saying “Text <your keyword> to <number> to receive special deals”
  3. Signs- Just pick somewhere with lots of traffic and make it visible.
  4. Social Media- Facebook and Twitter are great resources for promoting your company, and they’re also great ways to get involvement and sign-ups for your text alerts!

Now and then, you’ll get someone who wishes to stop receiving your text alerts.  They can simply reply “STOP” to one of your messages, and the system will remove them for you.


Helpful tips when creating an auto-reply

When somebody opts in to your service and becomes a subscriber, they receive an auto-reply.  It is important to remember that this auto-reply will be the first message your subscribers will receive after agreeing to your service, so you should consider the following things:

  1. Thank them!  A thank you goes a long way, and you want your customers to feel appreciated.
  2. Let them know what to expect.  What kinds of offers will they be receiving? How frequently will you be messaging them?
  3. It is required that you let your subscribers know that they can unsubscribe at any time.  You can make it so this is automatically included in your texts from your settings in the Dashboard, or you can include it manually.


How to send a message

Now that you have subscribers, it might be good to mention how to send a message!

  1. Log-in to your account at:
  2. Click the “Messages” tab on the navigation bar on the right side of your screen
  3. Click “Send a Message.” You can choose to send a message immediately, or schedule it for a later time here.
  4. Choose who you want to receive the message (All subscribers, individual number(s), or specific groups)
  5. Enter your message in the text field at the bottom of the page.
  6. Click “Send Message” and you’re done!

How often should you text your subscribers?

A good question to ask yourself is, “How often would I want to receive a text about this?” While you definitely want to keep your subscribers updated, remember that no one wants to receive too many messages. Generally for marketing, you don’t want to send more than 3 or 4 messages to your subscribers per month, but it really depends on your needs and your subscribers’ expectations.  If your subscribers expect more than that, then by all means, go for it!

Once you’ve logged in to your account on Mobile Text Alerts, you can click the “Marketing Tools” button on your dashboard.  Basically, we have provided a few ways to help you market and grow your business.

You can now set how many purchases it takes someone to earn a reward, keep track of how many purchases have been made, and notify your subscribers how close they are to their next reward.   2. Digital Coupons: The new text message digital coupons allow you to create beautifully designed digital coupons. Each digital coupon can be created with a header, an image, contact information, and instructions on how to redeem your digital coupon.
